CALIBER
Walchand College Of Engineering, Sangli.
Caliber is a 2-day mock campus event held by SOFTA exclusively for SOFTAites and board members of the club who organize Impulse. This event is especially held for the third year student club members as a virtual mock campus practice before appearing for the actual campus test. The first and second year student club members are also eligible to participate in order to judge and prepare themselves for the upcoming challenges that they would face in the final year.
Under this event, the organisers create an environment of a college recruitment drive and represent themselves as any hypothetical company conducting that drive. Caliber covers all the important phases of a real recruitment drive that an applicant goes through, right from pre-placement talk (PPT) to aptitude test to interviews. Some key stages of Caliber go as follows...
1. Aptitude Test- As many people are aware that many reputed companies use this phase in their recruitment and assessment processes for mass shortlisting of candidates. It is very necessary to clear this level to appear for the further phase if any and then the interviews. So, Caliber basically replicates the campus process and starts its Day 1 with a general aptitude test. The questions designed under this test are at par to assessments of most of the reputed and high paying companies.
2. Group Discussion- Companies often use it as a part of the recruitment process and institutes lean heavily on it during times of admission. The paradox is that while most of us are quite comfortable in a group under normal circumstances, there is a sense of nervousness and uncertainty during formal group discussions that tends to affect spontaneous performance. Group discussion also reveals many of our personality traits like leadership qualities and ability to work in a team. In Caliber, this round marks the end of Day 1.
At the end of day 1, candidates are given HR forms to fill and are asked to submit it on Day 2. This form resembles the resume template given by some of the companies. It helps candidates to make a list of answers and determine the way to approach to fill the resumes during the actual process.
3. Software Proficiency Test- With most of the recruitment drives being conducted in online mode, the candidates are also tested for the softwares in their respective area. In Caliber, candidates’ proficiency in handling their respective domain softwares is assessed through a sample problem statement or a test case. Following types of software tests are conducted under this stage:
Mechanical & Civil Engineering | Modelling softwares like AutoCAD, Catia, Solidworks, Creo, etc. |
---|---|
CSE, IT & Electronics Engineering | Coding IDEs as per different languages |
Core Electronics Engineering | Circuit building softwares like Proteus, etc. |
ELectrical Engineering | Softwares like Matlab, PLC, Scada, etc. |
Since first year students lack in their domain knowledge at that point, they are not allowed to appear for this round.
4. Technical Interview- The goal of technical interview is to determine if a candidate would be a good match for the proposed job role. In Caliber, for this stage, the shortlisted candidate is examined against his/her basic technical knowledge, the project works and technical experience in internship. To summarise, a candidate's theoretical as well as practical approach is tested. Since first year students lack in their domain knowledge at that point, they are not allowed to appear for this round.
5. Personal Interview- After the technical interview comes the Personal interview round. The goal of this interview is not to assess your technical skills only but also the managerial skills & personality traits. There are many ways by which a company can screen candidates based on their resumes. But there are candidate characteristics which can only be determined during a personal meeting. These interviews help students to improve their drawbacks in dealing with personal interviews. As a part of this round, participants are also judged on the resume cum HR form they are made to fill. This interview marks the end of Day 2 but not of Caliber.
The whole process is coordinated and organized by the final year Board members who later on give proper and detailed advice to the candidates. This event is officially concluded after proper one to one feedbacks are provided to respective candidates based on their performance in the event. Despite the pandemic scenario, Caliber too, was successfully carried out in online mode in the year 2021.
Caliber is the most awaited event amongst SOFTAites as there is no shortlisting, the participation fee is bare minimum or nil and above all the participants get an outstanding experience.
